Holy shit.

The Russian gov send in an abuse request for the @Bellingcat to be removed from mstdn.social :amaze:

I am not gonna comply, and have replied to Hetzner

No way I'm gonna let the evils of the gremlin dictate stuff on anything I host

UPDATE: Hetzner ignores their requests and we're in the clear: mstdn.social/@stux/11366257336…

Nice!♥️ Got a reply and Hetzner just ignores the bullshit from the Kremlin

Wish it where that easy with the war in Ukraine..

@cassandracorvid Discord is really the best and secure service.

This is achieved through a lack of transparency and centrality.

We should really prefere it over the fediverse.

Think about it...
Discord would probably follow such a request more quickly and you cannot do anything against it - different here.
@stux @Bellingcat

got something similar some time ago, replied almost the same, was good for Hetzner 😅. You are just required to answer, and “fck you” is sufficient.

@tobi from a legal perspective, the traditional response is "we refer you to Arkell v Pressdram, 1971" -which then requires any unfamiliar with that precedent to look it up before discovering the response is "fuck off"

@Bellingcat Thank you for posting this and thank you for your excellent response.

There's no end to how insidious Russian manipulation is in trying to shift views, and there's much too much apologia for it online — including on the Fediverse.

Being open and transparent about it like this is super helpful in combating it.

in reply to jolly rhys

@rhys @Bellingcat i've been seeing a rising wave of russian propaganda in the streets, too. people are putting up pro-russian street art in here in the united states, especially near towns with Trump stores. i can't prove a connection, but i have my suspicions that this is no accident. it's really important right now that if you have the power to do so, start putting out anti-authoritarian propaganda in physical space

@Bellingcat Well, that's a follow.

I wish I knew the exact post that has them sweating, undoubtedly something true and secret that they didn't think could be implied by evidence.

People who conduct assassinations probably should not let things they are afraid of be known. But they wouldn't be violent if they were clever.

Yeah, fuck you Putler.

@Urban_Hermit @Bellingcat Wasn't it the one about Putin and Trump being in a sexual relationship? Or am I thinking of something I read on @lowqualityfacts ? Sounds too plausible for Low Quality Facts...
in reply to stux⚡

If we do need to comply with Hetzner on this, I'm gonna look into an option to get mstdn.social in-home, like literally so they won't be able to touch anything

But that's a last resort since I do not have the hardware not money for that currently

At least there's options just in case

@Bellingcat Tell them that if they want to contact you they can download a Windows .exe file that functions (allegedly) as random number generator. That is, after all, what they ask others to do who wish to contact them.

@briankrebs @Bellingcat

They've acted against Mastodon instances in the past... but this is the first time I remember it being through an official policy channel.

in reply to stux⚡

@Bellingcat that email doesn't indicate what law they are even filing this under?
in reply to Jingle Ariels

@stux @Bellingcat

that's not the point

they push to see how far they get

you would be surprised how far people can go just by complaining

they weren't successful here, but they are often successful elsewhere

just by complaining

unfortunately #russia has had some limited success harassing #hetzner in the past:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetzner#…

however, you'll note the incident at the bottom of the incident list on wikipedia shows that hetzner has taken a new harder line towards russia

From reading that article it looks like Hetzner's priorities about Russia are finally set in a good way. Unfortunately they have a long history of employee screwups which could still be a problem.

in reply to stux⚡

@Bellingcat rkn.gov.ru? isn't that like Russian Government Censor Committee something something?
in reply to Gnosyz 🖖

@ZySoua @Bellingcat Roskomnadzor. Fuck, they've found out about us.

Maybe we should advise Russian users of mstdn to migrate lest they get DPI'd.

@tessarakt @th3rdsergeevich Roskomnadzor - Russian commission of monitoring, censoring and controlling the mass media. They are extremely aggressive since the 2022, banning tv shows, apps, books, movies, closing sites, reporting and sending violation reports and etc. They are extremely annoying

@ZySoua @tessarakt @th3rdsergeevich
Roskomnazgul is the preferred nomenclature for this evil censorship creature 🤭
in reply to Ben Royce 🇺🇦

@benroyce @ZySoua @tessarakt @th3rdsergeevich I disagree. Nazgul were once the greatest kings, while Roskomnadzor is just a bunch of assclowns who don't let people have fun

@ZySoua @tessarakt @th3rdsergeevich @stux and if you connect without VPN they become Roskompromat

Russian warship,
Go fuck yourself :devilblob:

Русский военный корабль, иди на хуй

Alternatively:

Российское правительство, иди на хуй

(Russian government, go fuck yourself)

I would also add "Slava Ukraini" to piss them off more.

Maybe I should never write such replies ;)

@DM_Ronin @stux @Bellingcat

i prefer the less direct and more casual diss. they are used to direct conflict, but a little patronizing sleaze pisses them off more

something like

"Омич полуёбок, скажи ты наркоман? я просто тоже где то там живу, могли бы вместе уёбывать наркотики"

("Hey, half-fucker guy from Omsk, tell me, are you a junkie? Because I live here somewhere too, we could shoot drugs together")

the complaint cited the account, not a post

so it's a simple matter of "violated russian law by saying truthful things that hurt our fascist fee fees"

@Bellingcat
And now I follow Bellingcat. The Russian government can go eat a bag of dicks.
in reply to Jason Howard

@jhoward @Bellingcat Don't waste good dick to Russians. I would say give them a bag of shit to eat but that's wasting good fertiliser!
