cambrian.social is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.

This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

it could be possible to hack to run on a machine
Sadly, no. I wish it was possible, but as far as I know, due to a technical decision I took in the design (using hard links for many things), snac does not work under 9front.

Because it's technically impossible to set up a Fediverse server with absolutely no AI code underneath whatsoever
Well, that's not totally exact. I'm the main developer of the ActivityPub server (and web client) and I'm actively against any AI or LLM. This is a line in the CONTRIBUTING.md file:
PRs, diff patches and bug reports must not incorporate any material generated by or with the assistance of any so-called "generative AI" tool or LLM.
I've never used a so-called AI in my life and will never do.

If I recall correctly, the Gotosocial Fediverse software also have a very clear position in this topic (i.e. no AI).

You're very right in the OS positions regarding LLMs, sadly. The nearest to what I approve is NetBSD, but it's not totally clean.

A simple, minimalistic and well documented instance server written in C, no database needed, totally JavaScript-free, no cookies either, not much bullshit.
Loads of bug fixes and stuff I don’t understand, but which are surely important and useful.

I've just published version 2.95 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. This is an important release, as it fixes an issue that can lead to denial of service attacks, so please update as soon as possible. It also includes the following changes:

Fixed a bug in the notification page that made snac hang forever while trying to read abnormally big files.

Improved support for text-only web browsers: it's now possible to configure a set of web browser user-agent strings that will receive simpler HTML in the private timeline web UI. Basically, it consists in avoiding details / summary HTML tags as much as possible.

Added some fixes to media proxy code.

Fixed EmojiReact code to allow any emoticon defined in emojis.json, not only those with colon-wrapped identifiers.

Fixed a bug in notification filtering (paging was sometimes incorrect).

Added a notification filter for Webmentions.

Mastodon API: Don't return reactions count as string (contributed by mkljczk), implemented GET /v1/media (contributed by clairemont).

Fixed bug in documentation examples (contributed by Sprite_tm).

Updated Ukrainian and Russian translations (contributed by wincentbalin and koru).

Hi everyone. Yesterday, many instances had a failure in the notifications area: accessing it was impossible. I have not much information about what the problem is, but it seems it's related to a specially crafted post that makes snac hang. If this is happening to you, and you have access to snac's disk storage, you can delete manually the files inside the notify directory of your user (they are a bunch of .json files).

Whenever I finally understand what is making snac fail, I'll publish a version that mitigates this.

                      Sorry for the inconvenience.

Found the issue with freezing on notifications as this time there were only 3 when it happened. One of them is a spam message containing 100's of users on various servers coming from an actors url https://cum.salon/users/pernia
So I'm hoping that blocking that will help in future ?

Right I must have had a bad or corrupted notification causing my issue as just deleted all of todays notication files and I can get in notifications again. Had to run the following:

                            find /home/snac/data/user/justine/notify -type f -newermt "2026-09-01" -delete

Hopefully I can click on the new notifications that come in now ?

Hmm great! I can't read any of my notifications on my instance as of today. I can read any other page except notifications. It show new notifications but on clicking just locks up and I eventually get a gateway timeout.
Tried rebuilding with make clean but nothing. Also noticed it is spawning multiple snac processes for some reason that arfe at 405% cpu useage.
Something must have changed in the code recently?
I've made a issue on their codeberg as I cannot read replies.

Self hosting is the way to prevent future problems like this. Just don't choose Mastodon because it is rather heavy on resources.

Have a look at , or or even - all perfectly hostable even from Raspberry Pis. And if you are only interested in hosting one to a handful accounts you won't miss anything from Mastodon. Although GotoSocial can also hosts 1000s of users (the other two mentioned, less so)

How about replacing Rust in the source code with either of these languages: ANSI C, Common Lisp, Scheme or Zig? I would like to see Faircamp as a lightweight alternative to Bandcamp in the same way Snac is a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.

Anyway, there are some issues with AI development in Rust:

There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one and one .

Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation.

This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience.

                                                  Thanks, @grunfink !

Actually, I added this post like:

My goal this week is to play with [Message Formatting](https://comam.es/snac-doc/snac.5.html) and [Accepted HTML](https://comam.es/snac-doc/snac.5.html).

And as far as I can tell, the following HTML tags are accepted in snac messages:

                                                      - <code>&lt;a&gt;</code>
