One thing Littlefedi has that I haven't seen anywhere else in the Fediverse is that it notifies me when someone has blocked me. In just a few minutes, I've only been blocked by three accounts; I must be losing my appeal. Saying what you really think can be an excellent filter on social media, and it's unavoidable for an autistic person like me.
I like this feature from littlefedi, it gives me the possibility of a "back lock".

So... I can enable binaries if available, but if they aren't available, it builds the package from source on the spot like how people classically think Gentoo does.
The install process was a bit head-scratchy just because I'm new to Gentoo but overall, this shares a ton of parallels to installing Archlinux without an install script or helper.
The cool thing about gentoo is that you almost have to learn about how the system works to install it to start with. Your choices, and they have to be your choices, this is a very 'elect' system - make the system what it is, literally. There's nothing in the pot that you don't throw into it. It has a few defaults and some config files are set up well enough for any standard desktop, but for the most part, you're about to find out how OpenRC, Wayland, SDDM and KDE work together.
It's flexible. I didn't make brand new filesystems or nuke my old drive. I blanked the partitions I had then adapted them to Gentoo. I had an efi/main partition/swap setup already and it was easy to translate that to Gentoo's layout of... the same layout lmao.
That's one of the cool things, here. Gentoo's guide doesn't MAKE you do anything. There are so many "ifs". It's extremely flexible and you wrap your system around it every step of the way. Everything fits and there's a "oh, you have X? Then do Y" for everything, seems like.
Where are we right now?Right now I've rebooted, grub successfully has my kernel loaded and we're going forward with installing KDE, SDDM and making sure Wayland and X11 both do their thing for getting me logged in... then I'll move towards solving any sound issues and from there, packages and getting the desktop set up.
So far so good, and no real errors to back up and deal with, believe it or not. Things have been pretty buttery, but I have had to go looking for clarification on a few things like make flags and such.
In the future, as I think most people running Gentoo do... it would probably be smart of me to copy these files for use if I ever have to restore this system from scratch. Having it all canned would save on time.

@firekeeper etckeeper is your friend if you want to preserve your configuration changes and the order in which you made them, and if you're on BTRFS snapper is also useful to experiment without fear of messing things up.

Once this is set, I've no doubt it's going to be a solid desktop but sheesh.
Currently handing off the wpa_supplicant -only path I've been using just for install over to networkmanager. XFCE and Slim are running, got flatpak and waterfox, just got some tuning to do for power and sleep settings, then I'll do snapper/restic, I have a NAS with a running restic repo. I'll probably just backup to it for now.
Oh, and pipewire isn't solid yet, lol, getting there.
As of today, I believe NetBSD is one of the most important operating systems to consider for your deployments.
With hardware costs rising dramatically, portability and efficiency have become more important than ever. If prices do not come down, we will probably have to adapt and create new kinds of hardware, at lower cost. And NetBSD, by its very nature, will be very easy to port to that hardware.
Does it run on your modern PC? Maybe. Maybe not.
But it runs on your server. On your VPS. On your SBC. On your old computer, which may still have a lot to give, especially if you want to keep ownership of your own data.

No jails or containerisation? smolBSD has already shown that a reduced NetBSD kernel can be so small that it can be started in milliseconds, while also adding the security benefits of virtualisation. A different concept, certainly. But one that already exists and can already be used.
Linux itself has opened up to AI. That is a choice I will not comment on.
But from now on, for those who do not want LLM-generated code in their operating system, there are essentially two options: fork Linux (!!!), or choose something different.
And NetBSD is that something different.

For a lot of people, this is their first foray into non-compliance. They are going to start with small things within their comfort zone. This isn't a failure to do bigger things, this is training for it.

She unironically is responsible for one of the COVID vaccines. She's put I don't even know how many kids through school while constantly and aggressively espousing acceptance and love to queer and black folks in a region and time when she would've overtly benefitted from not. She's consistently been a voice of acceptance in a place where there just wasn't any.
At every step of the way she's been on the right side of history, and while she was wealthy, it was literally only because she couldn't give her money away fast enough. I just I dunno, I loved her as a kid growing up and loved her even as an adult. This actually really fucking sucks.
My workshop at LRC on playing with UNIX V4 was a great success!
Everyone loved the teletype and terminal. In the manner of the day, I gave manuals to teach the system and ed (@ed1conf), and we now have a cohort of new ed users. A few groups solved or got close to solving my challenge of backporting the obfuscated mullender.c program from V7 to V4. Surprisingly with a dozen or so people on at once, UNIX handled the load fantastically.

I've written up a retrospective on my UNIX V4 workshop at Low Resource Computing, highlighting the cool things people accomplished and learned, along with snapshots of the filesystem throughout the workshop. It was a lot of fun!

Apparently people out here just labeling things whatever they want. Even proper furniture stores make no meaningful distinction between a coffee table and a cocktail table. There used to be a difference in size and shape (cocktail tables were square or rectangular, and not quite as tall) but now, like in most areas of life where words and laws no longer matter, furniture stores are just going off of “vibes.”

High-quality real wood furniture is no longer available for the middle class. It’s either big box store quality (iffy at the best of times, but thanks to the Enshittification of All Things getting increasingly more common) for the masses, or high-end/bespoke shops for the elite.

There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac.
Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation.
This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience.

Fixed it the old-school way, by unplugging and reconnecting the power supply. Now the Raspi that holds the instance is running off a power bank 🙂
