Have you also considered that we may all be wrong about the consequences of the tariffs? Economic theory and capitalists conclude that this will be very bad for everyone, but what if it's not. What if all of that is propaganda. I think this is the most worrying aspect, because he would single-handedly discredit the entire global overclass without any alternative prepared. We would suddenly be living in a very different, much more dangerous world.

Imagine if he can win and that this would be very good for the US. That would be catastrophic for the world, possibly much worse than the potential damage caused by this turning out to be bad.

To re-iterate, I still don't think much will happen for reasons I've mentioned before. The entire capitalist class is already supposedly pissed at him and markets are down 2% today, which means his and his friends' own wealth are down too.

stocks go up and stocks go down. Capitalists can be pretty sanguine about that. Depends if they're on board with the Emperor using economic warfare to discipline the vassal kings and bring them in line. That could be very good for the interests of capital in the long term. I wouldn't rely on Canada or Mexico to defend the needs of workers in this situation.

@scaramanga FT claims that they are absolutely not in board. All other financial news in the last month has also indicated that, with a handfull of exceltions.

Further, let's say China goes to the WTO to complain. If it works, that just gives Trump a perfect moment to get rid of another one of those annoying liberal institutions of global US dominance and replace it with direct rule from the Emperors throne. This is all just about reshaping the world order into one where the Emperor of the world operates more directly and with less annoying institutions in the way

@scaramanga I think that's definitely one valid hypothesis that I have been entertaining in addition to the other two, but I don't think we have the evidence for it yet (even if that's what he might like). We'll see whether I'm right about the other or not this week.

Ngl I actually hope a recession happens on Trump's watch, as the alternative would be much worse in the long run. Even there, the timing has to be exquisite. 1982 was a deep recession year and also was a Democratic wave year, but 1984 was the most disastrous election year in American history. The only thing I know for sure is that things are definitely going to get a lot worse before they maybe get better. If there's a World War III, America will be one of the Axis powers. All of America's near peer rivals are hostile to human rights. Nobody is going to save us. EU is probably the closest thing to a large polity with a semblance of moral values, but what happens if Germany falls to fascism by electing AfD?
