in reply to internetarchive • •So much for the newspaper of record. What made them the newspaper of record is microfilms of NYT back issues in libraries all over the world. I suppose they're thinking having to schlep over to the library and ask the librarian to use the microfilm viewer is a reasonable amount of friction to count as "payment" of sorts, whether or not they get a cut. For all I know, maybe they do. I know nothing of library practices. Are the libraries paying some kind of royalties on periodicals on microfilm? At any rate, surely moneygrubbing every back issue is a disservice to legacy. I do of course understand that piracy is a discourtesy to living authors. Perhaps commerce is all that remains at this point in time.
