i don't like to downplay f-droid efforts, or spread pessimism.
still, my unfortunate opinion. android starts to be lost cause, too much gooish google in it, like there is apple control in apple devices.
it is not just closed google components, it is android ecosystem and api's in general. alphabet inc controls android too much.
of course, delaying destruction of open android is still beneficial for short term.

@zetabeta I'm optimistic because competition authorities around the world are paying close attention and trying a wide range of strategies to open up the mobile ecosystems.
And while the banner correctly states F-Droid being under threat: it's not just F-Droid, it's the free Android world being under threat. In its entirety. So the same applies to IzzyOnDroid – but also to Obtainium & Co. And if you think you could still use Aurora to access the PlayStore, think again: how would you install Aurora in the first place?
This is the empire striking. The alleged "security" is just a way to circumvent the requirement to open for alternative stores.

I did use the means on keepandroidopen.org to reach out. However, I am not convinced it will change the course Alphabet/Google set for Android.
Therefore I preordered the new #jollaphone with Sailfish OS and AndroidAppSupport.
Maybe it is time for Linux to shine on mobile as well. May it be #sailfishos, #postmarketos, #ubuntutouch or another Linux mobile OS. And Android emulators like #WayDroid .

200 days till lock down. That means about half a year to finish my divorce from Google and find a replacement phone.
Ironically this is the first news lately that has not made me feel horribly behind schedule.
@cy8aer iirc grapheneos disagrees with fdroid's signature model (where all apps are signed by fdroid and builds aren't really reproducible), among other things. However, I don't think this is the case here. You may ping them and ask if you want.

@Alonely0 @cy8aer Older apps were added when reproducibility wasn't achievable. For this reason today only about 22% of apps that we host are signed by their developer. This number will increase with time as we push for reproducibility at inclusion time. Also, switching from one signer to another is an annoying process that users need to take manually, for security reasons.
I am so sad. I was considering returning to android after a hiatus. But this new direction really makes me hope that true open platforms will be viable for daily use soon.

I read some of those threads linked from the discuss link. This whole situation is exhausting. Multiple ways to get screwed over on multiple fronts. The layman has no chance to understand any of this.
And then, of course, you'll get a pithy "use ubuntu" reply to these threads, which is fine if you have one of the 12 old phones supported by it.
I don't know what the solution is, but if the answer is "get the apk from github and ensure you trust the dev" then essentially everyone is screwed.
I'm already drifting away from android as an everything device. I'm so tired of Google enshitifying what they made and the need to be constantly online. My guess is that I'll have a phone that's just a phone in 5 years. All I need is chat apps like Signal, SMS, calling, and a basic web browser to look the occasional thing up. What I run could be modified android, but it won't be anything close to what Google would want me to run

As a big fan and user of F-Droid, I'm afraid the writing is on the wall.
As others have said, we can no longer rely on Android being what it needs to be.
A true alternative is required.

@_RyekDarkener_ It's not only about "your" phone, but of your friends and family too. Note that Google knows PR really well, people already relaxed and forgot about this, as media just repeated the Google texts verbatim.

google is an integral part of the security/surveillance state. they're not susceptible to public opinion. hopefully the tech crowd will continue to develop alternatives.

@tehstu @cy8aer yeah, it's a technical discussion, sorry I assumed more than I should have (it's an xkcd 2501 situation, look it up lol). However, I have to say that relying on GitHub releases is not that bad of a deal with an app store like Obtainium, which streamlines app updates. It's actually a quite secure model since it comes as straight from the developer as it possibly can.

@TTFKA_Tay0 To be fair, they are not alternatives, they use the same code, and are at the mercy of Google when it comes to releasing such code. Otherwise, once installed, Lineage and other Android distributions can give the freedom back to their users to install what they want.

I still have problems to understand what happens with apps like those of fossify, or DuckDuckGo for example, that i downloaded and maintain over F-Droid, but that are also available on Playstore and thus should be under the "verified" category.
These should still work but not the F-Droid Store App itself so i need to update via a website manually???
I am not an IT person. I genuelly have problems understanding this, despite having read the infos i found so far.

@v_d_richards If signed by the developer (reproducible) and the developer has submitted to the Google pressure, the app will work fine.
If signed by F-Droid, we think they will not work at all, not even our Client, so we will not be able to provide updates.
For those apps already on Play you will submit to Google's rules and use Play, right?
For those not on Play... good luck tracking the APK, if the developer bowed down.
I hated Google before, but do more every day.
I had hoped that if Apps and their developers took it on them to do the verification shit, loading and maintaining at least such apps from other places than PlayStore would be possible in Android.
The users are trapped:
Banking Apps and some others don' t work with Custom Roms.
Open Source from free places will no longer work on G-Android.
The only solution is havingntwo devices which is expensive af.

Does anyone know how this affects phones that already have F-Droid and apps from there installed?
Will some Android/Google Update make them stop working all of a sudden? Or not let me update them anymore? Or will this affect only future Android versions?

I think it is useless to keep android open. As long as google controls it, it is a sinking ship.
Much better to move to other alternatives like Jolla or other linuxbased options and rebuild from scratch.
its a good thing actually as the main thing it affects is intimate partner violence stalking and really low hanging fruit malware. you can literally still sideload, you just cant distribute apks anonymously. you can still modify a phone to remove the restriction, just not without the owner noticing, which is the actual point. this is completely out of touch with the reality of the android malware ecosystem, the harm it causes and why they are actually doing this.

Having to pay a company and send your government id to that company, who will absolutely turn that data over to the government, is not an acceptable way to develop software.
Especially as that government is actively targeting dissenters and anyone who opposes them.
Especially as that company is making plans to go into the PC space, creating computers more locked down than Windows.
Especially as that company already has an 'anti-virus' activated on every Android licensed device by default that flags and prevents these malicious apps.
@liquidparasyte Most open-source apps are already published to Google Play. I use a degoogled phone and this will not affect me in any way. It will absolutely affect people who will have to burn through disposable identities to develop malware.
It will also affect developers who choose to or have to stay anonymous to protect themselves from bad actors like rogue governments, and make it harder to develop software that authorities do not want made, such as emulation software, or adblocking tools and clients, or law enforcement raid watches.
Your personal exclusion from these restrictions does not solve the problem for developers, nor the majority of people who use Android who can't, don't know how to, or afford a degoogled device.

@fisk @liquidparasyte Maybe we were lost in translation? Google did not back down, they appear to double down and continue on track... The "advanced flow" was never shown to anyone, also even if that will exist it will not be by September 2026 but at a later unannounced date.

This is the reason why i removed some of my apps from Play Store and i only develop with frameworks that allow creating apps that work with linux-first phones like Pinephone

Do I understand correctly, that Google free Android is not directly affected by this policy?
But the majority of the userbase is affected, so an app developer would loose nearly the complete userbase and this would result in many developers giving up, destroying the app market.
And this in turn will affect Google free Android.

@blackoverflow Yes, if you're tech-savvy you'll figure a good device to flash your favorite custom Android distro that favors user freedom.
But the other 3.9 billion stock users... they are at the mercy of Google, if you want to recommend them a good app from #FDroid they are blocked.
I hope you can win this, but is the trend. No more civil rights for us. The Fascist consortium is decided to impose Sigstore and such all around.
At this point it would be crazy to develop any Free/Libre application for Android. Don't care what Google says tomorrow, we can NOT trust Big Tech. We need to be in control of our computing resources, both at software and hardware level.

I hate to disagree here, but as an admin who deals with *many* users with phones in the wild, this is a *good* move by Google.
They're *NOT* stopping you from side-loading apps. They're doing the same thing banks have started doing when people try to withdraw cash -- verifying that you're not being coached or hacked and that you *REALLY* want to do what you said.
This is annoying to a very small subset of people, and *VERY* useful to a larger group.

While Lithuanian and Polish orthography have numerous diacritics, the circumflex is not among them. It would be unlikely to be used in anyone's name, even if it was of foreign origin. This happens with French names used as English given names, too: Éric > Eric, François > Francis, Théodore > Theodore, Frédéric > Frederic, etc.

The FDA decided not to even review Moderna's mRNA flu vaccines for approval, even though the studies the FDA would be reviewing were conducted the way the FDA told Moderna to do them.
Now #Moderna expects that none of its other #mRNA #vaccines will be reviewed, and has halted studies on vaccines for EBV, HSV, and shingles.
A lot of people with herpes would be angry if they found out.
A lot of people who have family members with #MS -- now thought to be caused in part by EBV -- will be livid.

this makes me furious! My autoimmune troubles were all triggered by reactivated EBV. If there were a vaccine, my whole life would have been different. If we could save others from the same fate, I would do anything to help them.
The only reason would be that competing companies have bought their way into favor with the DJT administration, and Moderna is on the outside looking in.

No, there is a bit more to it. Moderna was the first to announce the possibility of using mRNA to build the vaccine, they announced it either just after Chump lost in 2020 or just after Chump left the white house in 2021. And then they had the audacity to lose to Pfizer to market launch, so to Chump it is very personal, which means to RFKjr it is personal.

A vaccine manufacturer would normally apply for approval in many jurisdictions.
But for some back-of-the-envelope calculations: new vaccines are generally introduced to more affluent countries first, especially for diseases that aren't immediately fatal. The market for vaccines against EBV, HSV, and VZV would be in this category.

Canada: 40M
US: 350M
Without US, the market is AT LEAST 40% smaller. Is it still worth it do to the studies?

They 100% could apply for approval in Europe or Canada but they won't because without access to the US market their isn't enough profit for them... and companies like Moderna don't care about people, they only care about profit.
Europe, Canada, et al need to force the issue by changing patent law (at least for medical patents but honestly it would be best to cover all patents) to include a 'use it or lose it' clause. If companies don't pursue approval Government's should have the right to step in and use the companies patents to develop the drugs themselves.

I'm not the right person to be explaining the perverse intersection of healthcare and capitalism. The short answer is, most large companies won't do anything that loses money. In fact, in US law they are specifically prohibited from doing things that are expected to lose money.

Yes, but it has to be targeted cooperatives. A coop is not going to be able to afford research into novel uses of mRNA vaccines. Coops cannot afford the protein synthesizers needed to make those novel mRNA vaccines into enough doses.
Now, if we instead taxed corporations / share holders profits the right way, they would be incentivized to spend the money that coops couldn't afford to spend.
EBV is also a common trigger for the lifelong illness known as ME/CFS.

That's why profit shouldn't be the driver for medical research. If these companies were consumer cooperatives, their purpose and focus would be to benefit their customers, not to extract money from their customers' pockets and put it into shareholders' hands. Then it wouldn't matter if the drug was profitable. It would matter if it was affordable and worthwhile to develop, manufacture, and deliver it.

Hi Dan. I saw your toot yesterday and it made me think. And even though I agree with the spirit of it I believe it’s important that we have another type of conversation around this. These people are not just some crazy psychopaths, they are the logical byproduct of this system. Moreover they ARE the system. It’s just the system doing what it does, being what it is. To my point of view, there’s no “making room for better people at the top”. Don't anthropomorphize LLMs, language is important. Say "the bot generated some text" not "the AI replied". Use "this document contains machine-generated text" not "this work is AI-assisted". See how people squirm when you call out their slop this way.

Even talking about "text", in the context of #LLM, is a subtle anthropomorphization.
Text is a sequence of symbols used by human minds to express information that they want to syncronize a little with other human minds (aka communicate).
Such syncronization is always partial and imperfect, since each mind has different experiences and informations that will integrate the new message, but it's good enough to allow humanity to collaborate and to build culture and science.
A statistically programmed software has no mind, so even when it's optimized to produce output that can fool a human and pass the #Turing test, such output hold no meaning, since no human experience or thought is expressed there.
It's just the partial decompression of a lossy compression of a huge amount of text. And if it wasn't enough to show the lack of any meaning, the decompression process includes random input that is there to provide the illusion of autonomy.
So instead of "the AI replied" I'd suggest "the bot computed this output" and instead of "this work is AI-assisted" I'd suggest "this is statistically computed output".

couldn’t agree more with this ethic. The psychological impacts of users ie society believing that LLMs are people and fufilling roles that actual humans should, will probably unfold over the years and decades. All because regulators circa 2024/5/6 believed it was over reach to demand LLMs don’t use anthropomorphic language and narrative style. Prompt: “what do you think?” Reply: “there is no “I”. This is a machine generated response, not a conscious self.” - sounds better to me.

i try to limit my LLM use because it's fundamentally evil, but whenever i do use it i never treat it like a person. i believe that's how people become addicted to chatbots. it is not an intelligent being with experiences and feelings, it's a cold machine that just uses an algorithm to arrange words from a database in a way said algorithm is tweaked to sound like human writing. our brains struggle to understand that, which is how you end up with people abandoning their real friends for AI bots and even considering them to be romantic partners.

this is true, it's really strange seeing non-tech people around me talk abt LLMs as if it was a sentient being, it's kinda unsettling .
Still, we need to make sure there's no lack of responsibility for the operators or users of these programs. With the hole story about the blogpost generated autonomously using an LLM as a response to a FOSS-Maintainers AU-Policy, some people kinda forgot that there is some person responsible for setting it up that way and for letting the program loose.
the worst cases of this, is when people say "chatgpt said..." as if an AI could talk. Or "chatgpt thinks..." as if an AI could think.

Turns out Microsoft forgot to renew a domain name. Some rando diagnosed it and paid to renew it for them before they even knew what was happening.
They "graciously" offered to compensate him the $35 he spent.
Possibly one of my early disillusionments about capitalism. The man deserved a goddamn reward.

I'm thinking of subscribing to Nebula instead. Creator-made platform by some really great creators. They had a sale on in January that I missed, $30 for the whole year.
