Yes, defending Angel Reese is personal.
Because defending Angel Reese isn’t just about the game. It’s about what it feels like, deep in my body, every time a Black woman is targeted for speaking up, asking for more, or simply refusing to shrink.
Due to my lived experiences, the “maybe there’s more to the story” and “but what if…” comments never land as neutral, as reflective.

#USpol #DemocracyVersusRepublic
a long but readable read — was the US constitution really designed for democracy, or designed to protect a powerful few? Ari Berman May 2024 in Mother Jones;
—
“From childhood, we are taught to venerate the Constitution as a civic religion, but the truth is that America’s democratic experiment has been defined since the nation’s founding by a central tension over whom the government should favor. The United States has historically been a laboratory for both oligarchy and genuine democracy. And to grasp the present-day fight, one must understand the long-standing clash between competing notions of majority rule and minority rights…
and
“But as the United States has democratized in the centuries since, extending the vote and many other rights to formerly disenfranchised communities, the antidemocratic features built into the Constitution have become even more pronounced, to the point that they are threatening the survival of representative government in America.
The timing of our modern retreat from democracy is no coincidence. The nation is now roughly 20 years away from a future in which white people will no longer be the majority…
and
“This imbalance is growing more lopsided: By 2040, roughly 70 percent of Americans will live in 15 states with 30 senators, while the other 30 percent—who are whiter, older, and more rural than the country as a whole—will elect 70 senators…

Um...
I guess you haven't read much news about current events in the UK, huh?

Even the dogs in the street can see the tide turning toward Trump's mini-me there.
There's a kind of guilty pleasure for an Irishman (and probably for those true Scots who want their independence) in the idea of that sad piece of human garbage as PM of Britain.
I dream that Scotland will become independent. Maybe even Wales. And maybe, at long long last, Ireland will be united.
Either way, i think the idea of the "UK" is doomed, and that warms my Irish heart. :)

As long as we’re in the “September Surge” (that trend where there’s a noticeable uptick in job vacancies and hiring around September and October, when companies ramp up for year-end and the upcoming year), you might as well also ask “What DON’T I want in a new job?”

The talk, in context: popagandhi.com/posts/my-talk-a…
Warner Brothers suing Midjourney over people being able to create infringing Batman and Scooby-Doo illustrations is hilarious, because fuck Midjourney and the other LLM landlords, but also WB and others were SO excited to use LLMs to replace creatives everywhere with digital slaves and now it’s biting them in the ass.
Sorry, folks, you helped the genie out of the bottle, and while you might be able to force LLM service providers to forbid certain terms, you can’t stop anyone with local models and LoRAs from generating an endless stream of “infringing” depictions of your “property”.

The plans of zillionaires. They seem fine with murdering billions of people as long as they get to have their private child rape islands. If we want to have any other future, we're going to have to go remove them as well as go around them.
That is, get rid of systemic issues favoring money in politics so we can ditch fossil fuels as a society, in addition to individuals doing their own small part by adopting new habits. Riding bikes is nice, but it's only about 1% of the blocking issue.
@bweller this is regarding Mark Carney's plan to scrap incentive programs for EV sales in Canada, to help protect the job market in the Canadian auto sector (by curbing the demand for Teslas, Volts, etc)
There is some truth that we don't have the infrastructure or experience to build the EV components that are in demand, but it still seems like the very much wrong way to address the problem, especially since leaning into the ICE auto sector stuff is still leaning too much on an unstable partner
Finally, a reason to use Bing Maps.

Good grief; I knew Audible/Amazon were predatory but I’m surprised this is legal.
Short version - if an author isn’t exclusive to Audible, then Audible will do their best to take the author’s royalties and give them to people who are exclusive.
Exclusive including “not available in libraries”.
Audible continues to be EVIL

Transit in BC. Frustrating! A route that used to be 1h 13m in 2011 is now 1h:46m compared to 37 minutes by car.
How can transit planners expect riders to take a bus for 3hrs and 19m when the same journey could be done in 1h 10m in a car?
That's the reality in the Nanaimo transit system. They serve a vast area, with over 100,000 people. But In 25 years, the time to get from the edge of that area, to the middle, has grown.
And don't get me started on using the railway.

Do you take the bus from Port Alberni to Nanaimo?
In Metro Vancouver we have a dedicated bus that picks up people from a few cities and then travels directly to UBC - the 99 or Bee Bus, as it is know locally. I wonder if that would work for your location?

Parents must confirm sex at birth for students in girls' sports in Edmonton Public Schools | CBC News
Will parents comply?
Surely there will be protests about this, even on the grounds that all girls suddenly face a barrier to the sports they have a right to play, that boys don't,.
Even if they don't care about trans girls' rights.

"Fairness"? Certainly unfair to trans girls.
"Safety"? How many injuries are caused by trans girls, compared with overall injuries in school sports? Where's the evidence?

Healthcare extra...
One of the areas in healthcare that most sharply highlights the difference between those who can afford private healthcare and those who cannot: dental care.
Thousands are suffering constant pain and related health issues because dental care is simply unaffordable.
Metro prices.
Basic filling, $200-450; root canal, $1.7k - $2.5k; crown - $2k plus; oral hygienist - $120-200.
And specialist services such as endodontics, periodontics or orthodontics are double-triple these prices.
There's a desperate need to provide free dental care for low income and disadvantaged NZers for key dental procedures.

I think there are two things necessary for positive change:
1) A collapse of faith in the bourgeois social order;
2) The growth of a network of directly democratic institutions that involve large numbers of people.
The second is, materially, more work. But people try all the time. Their work is co-opted, and that's where the lack of the first is most painfully felt.
