Perl has fallen out of favor because it seduces people into playing a particular kind of code golf, seeing if you can reduce the number of named variables all the way to zero.
Obviously code golf gets silly, but I do always hate coming up with meaningless variable names (like in a quick foreach), so I like just being able to use the standard $_ variable
When other languages do it, its called "tacit" or "point-free" programming, but when Perl does it its called "a mess" and "a crime against humanity"
